The town lies in a narrow valley between the high granite domes of the Klein Koperberge (Small Copper Mountains). This name gives away the reason for the early settlement which gradually turned into a major commercial and administrative centre for copper mining operations in the region.
Small nature reserve, on the road to the airport, some 15 kilometres out of town. Here one can get a good idea of Namaqualand's fascinating flora. More than 300 species, among them numerous succulents, can be seen here.
